14th October 1964: Sam becomes Jimmy La Motta, a young man with Down's Syndrome living at a time when the mentally-challenged were thought slow and retarded. Jimmy is currently living with his brother, Frank, who has arranged for Jimmy to have a job interview at the docks where he works; Sam manages to convince the foreman to employ him - which pleases Frank’s wife, Connie, who is uncomfortable with having Jimmy living in her house. But when Sam goes to work the next day, he receives a hostile welcome from his fellow workers, in particular, a roughneck named Blue. Al tells Sam that unless he can keep his job, he will be destined for life in a mental hospital – a situation that Al will not allow, as his own sister was deemed retarded, and she died in such an institution…
